Fishing for Solutions

Because many fishers in the aquarium trade use cyanide to stun the fish, trade in aquarium fish can be deadly business for the world’s coral reefs. Although the fish can be harmed by the cyanide, the effects last much longer in the coral reef. But members of the Marine Aquarium Council don’t want the world to give up their aquariums to stop destructive practices in the aquarium trade. Instead they’re working on a system to certify people in the aquarium business—from fishers to shop owners—that are helping protect coral reefs. The council is hoping that its system will help consumers do their part to keep coral reefs as healthy and vibrant as the aquariums they supply.
