Cow

It can take 1,000 years to form 1 inch of soil. If people grew that slowly, it would take 80,000 years to grow a basketball player.

Ranching Cattle… and More

Cattle ranching does not have to result in soil erosion and loss of biodiversity. In fact, by taking care of the land, many ranchers are protecting the soil and creating great wildlife habitat. For example, one ranch in northern Mexico is turning profits, conserving soil, and providing some of the best wildlife habitat in the region—all at the same time. Although the surrounding area has some of the worst soil erosion in Mexico, Rancho Rincon de Anacahuitas maintains native grasses to feed the cattle and hold soil in place. And watering ponds provide some of the best remaining habitats for water birds. You say you have to see it to believe it? Then head down for a visit—ecotourists are a welcome addition to the ranchland’s diversity.
