Tree shade

More than 2 million acres of Costa Rica’s forested land is protected—this includes national parks, forest preserves, fauna sanctuaries, and national forests.

Made in the Shade

How would you like to have your coffee and drink it, too? Now that shade-grown coffee has hit the market, you don’t have to feel guilty about your morning cup of joe. Although many coffee plantations replace native forests with monocultures of coffee and strip away any vegetation that shades the coffee plants, shade-grown coffee plantations cultivate their coffee under a canopy of trees. These plantations, many of which are located in high-diversity areas like Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua, help provide habitat for many species of migratory birds. So drink to diversity!
