Marine Stewardship Council

Power to the People

Buying seafood that was caught sustainably is a lot like casting a vote at the checkout counter that says “I support biodiversity.” But it’s often hard to know how your seafood was caught. That’s why environmental groups and fishing industry representatives have partnered with the Unilever Corporation to create the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

This independent, nonprofit organization has developed a system of certification that allows people who fish sustainably to place an MSC label on their seafood. Already, three major fisheries have been certified, and more are on the way. Now consumers can look for the MSC label—and cast their vote for biodiversity.
