Shrimp. Lobster. Swordfish. Tuna. What do you think of when you hear these words? Marine biodiversity … or dinner?

Fish have been a staple of the human diet for thousands of years. But most fisheries are in trouble because we’re catching fish and other marine species faster than they can reproduce. We’re also fishing in ways that destroy marine habitats and catch millions of “unwanted” creatures called bycatch, which are often tossed overboard, dead or dying. Many people around the world—from conservationists to governments to fishers—are searching for ways to improve fishing practices so that we can have our fish … and eat them, too.

Fish Stew:
When you buy fish at the market, you probably think about its flavor, freshness, and price. But do you ever think about the environmental impact of your selection? Visit our market and see if you can find the sustainably caught fish to make an environmentally friendly stew.
