Organized in the early 1970s, the Allegheny Group's first projects involved legal battles to oppose the granting of strip mining permits, which threatened irreplaceable local water supplies. It also fought, both in and out of court, to protect the Clarion River from pulp-mill wastes. Currently, the group is most active in air and water pollution-related issues.

Creek Connections has forged effective partnerships between Allegheny College and regional K-12 schools to turn waterways in Northwest Pennsylvania, Southwest New York, and the Pittsburgh area into outdoor environmental laboratories. Emphasizing a hands-on, inquiry based investigation of local waterways, this project annually involves over 40 different secondary schools as well as more than 50 teachers and their classes.

The WRCF is the principal agency that supports research and protection efforts for Pennsylvania's natural heritage, including its unique collection of native nongame animals and wild plants.
